Stanislav Grof
More than six decades devoted to exploring the healing, transformative and evolutionary potential of holotropic states of consciousness.

Exploring the frontiers of consciousness
Stanislav Grof, MD, PhD, is one of the founders and chief theoreticians of transpersonal psychology. His work emerged from a dialogue between clinical research, psychiatry, experiential psychotherapy and the systematic study of non-ordinary states of consciousness.
From his early psychedelic research in Prague and Baltimore to the development of the experiential method now taught within Grof® Legacy Training as Grof® Breathwork, his career has challenged the limits of conventional psychological models and proposed a broader understanding of human experience.
His contributions have influenced generations of psychologists, psychiatrists, researchers, therapists and facilitators across the world.
An integrative framework for transformation
Grof’s work brings together research, theory and practice to study experiences that extend beyond individual biography.
Psychedelic research
He was a principal investigator in Prague and directed psychiatric research in Maryland, studying the therapeutic and heuristic potential of psychedelics in clinical settings.
Expanded cartography of the psyche
He proposed a map that integrates biographical, perinatal and transpersonal dimensions of human experience.
Transpersonal psychology
He was one of its founders and chief theoreticians, as well as the founding president of the International Transpersonal Association.
Holotropic states
He developed this concept for states of consciousness with healing, transformative, heuristic and evolutionary potential.
Grof® Breathwork
Developed with Christina Grof at Esalen, this non-pharmacological experiential method supports deep self-exploration and psychological work.
Spiritual emergency
He helped distinguish some transformative crises from psychopathology and encouraged more informed and compassionate forms of support.
From clinical research to an international legacy
Medical training and pioneering research
After training in medicine and psychiatry, he led a systematic program exploring the therapeutic and heuristic potential of LSD and other psychedelic substances.
Johns Hopkins and Maryland
He continued his work in Baltimore, served as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins and became Chief of Psychiatric Research at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center.
Esalen and experiential psychotherapy
As Scholar-in-Residence at Esalen, he expanded his work toward non-pharmacological methods and developed the approach now taught as Grof® Breathwork with Christina Grof.
Transpersonal psychology and international teaching
He published extensively, trained professionals, organized international conferences and taught an expanded understanding of consciousness across many countries.
Grof® Legacy Training
With Brigitte Grof, he launched an international training designed to preserve, deepen and transmit his work to future generations.
Concepts that changed the field
Grofian psychology offers language for experiences that often fall outside conventional psychological maps.
COEX systems
Constellations of emotionally related experiences connecting different periods of a person’s life.
Basic perinatal matrices
A framework for studying possible relationships between birth experience, emotional patterns and transformative processes.
The transpersonal dimension
Experiences in which ordinary identity seems to extend beyond the individual self, time or space.
Movement toward wholeness
“Holotropic” literally means moving toward wholeness: a deep tendency of the psyche toward integration and greater coherence.
Essential books
His publications span clinical research, consciousness cartography, transpersonal psychology and the support of transformative crises.
