Exploring the frontiers of consciousness

Stanislav Grof, MD, PhD, is one of the founders and chief theoreticians of transpersonal psychology. His work emerged from a dialogue between clinical research, psychiatry, experiential psychotherapy and the systematic study of non-ordinary states of consciousness.

From his early psychedelic research in Prague and Baltimore to the development of the experiential method now taught within Grof® Legacy Training as Grof® Breathwork, his career has challenged the limits of conventional psychological models and proposed a broader understanding of human experience.

His contributions have influenced generations of psychologists, psychiatrists, researchers, therapists and facilitators across the world.

Major contributions

An integrative framework for transformation

Grof’s work brings together research, theory and practice to study experiences that extend beyond individual biography.

01

Psychedelic research

He was a principal investigator in Prague and directed psychiatric research in Maryland, studying the therapeutic and heuristic potential of psychedelics in clinical settings.

02

Expanded cartography of the psyche

He proposed a map that integrates biographical, perinatal and transpersonal dimensions of human experience.

03

Transpersonal psychology

He was one of its founders and chief theoreticians, as well as the founding president of the International Transpersonal Association.

04

Holotropic states

He developed this concept for states of consciousness with healing, transformative, heuristic and evolutionary potential.

06

Spiritual emergency

He helped distinguish some transformative crises from psychopathology and encouraged more informed and compassionate forms of support.
